Infrared Thermography

ELC Engineering performs infrared thermography inspections of electrical systems to locate abnormal heat before it becomes a failure, fire, or recertification deficiency. Scans are conducted under load on switchgear, panelboards, busways, disconnects, transfer switches, transformers, VFDs, starters, meter centers, and related equipment.


Inspections are performed by Level II Certified Thermographers. Level II qualification is the minimum standard accepted for Miami-Dade and Broward electrical recertification work. It means the thermographer is trained to interpret load versus temperature, distinguish true faults from reflections and emissivity errors, assign severity, and produce reports building officials will accept.


Why it matters

Loose lugs, corroded connections, overloaded breakers, phase imbalance, and failing components generate heat long before they are visible. Infrared inspection finds those conditions while the system is energized and in normal operation. That reduces the risk of outage, equipment damage, and electrical fire, and it gives owners a documented baseline for repair and maintenance.


Building recertification

Miami-Dade and Broward recertification guidelines require infrared inspection of electrical systems operating at 400 amperes or greater. Typical scope includes busways, switchgear, panelboards (other than dwelling-unit load centers), disconnects, VFDs, starters, control panels, timers, meter centers, gutters, junction boxes, transfer switches, exhaust fans, and transformers. The report is submitted with the sealed electrical recertification package.


ELC’s reports include paired thermal and visual images for exceptions, temperature differentials, equipment identification, occupancy/service data, and a clear statement of findings suitable for the Authority Having Jurisdiction, insurers, and the owner’s maintenance file. The same method supports NFPA 70B electrical maintenance programs outside of recertification.
